Keeping Kosher While In Chengdu

Kosher Grocery Shopping

There are a few chain stores in Chengdu that carry products from around the world that are Kosher. Many of them bear popular Kosher symbols such as the OU or OK. Otherwise they can be found on the list of kosher products from that country.

Items that can be found kosher throughout the year include: peanut butter, jam, coffee, tea, soy milk, ketchup, mayonnaise, pasta, cereal, Crisco shortening, baking powder, baking soda, dry yeast, rice, BBQ sauce, canned goods, oatmeal, granola bars, oil, mustard, spices, tuna, cake mix, potato chips, laffy taffy, raisins, peanuts, pickles, flour, sugar, salt etc.

These items can be found at the Carrefour, the Metro, and at Sabrina’s County Shoppe. As well as Supermarkets in the International Malls.

In general: Fruits and vegetables bought throughout China should be washed very well before eating, as well as only bottled water should be used for drinking.

There are no Vegetarian restaurants in China that comply to Kashrut standards. There may indeed be non-kosher fat in a food that is labeled ‘strictly vegetarian. 'Many travelers have unfortunately learned this the hard way.
